Manassas Midwifery Welcomes Baby #200!!!

Manassas Midwifery and Women’s Health Center welcomed its 200th baby on Sunday, March 27!  Born healthy and full-term, baby Gonchigsuren Nandin was the first baby for parents, Enkhbaatar and Mendbayar, both natives of Mongolia but now residing in Manassas.  “My first thought when I saw my baby was, boy or girl??  My next thought was who she looks like…oh, she looks like my husband.  And then I started crying, I was so happy”, exclaimed Enkhbaatar, the day following her baby’s birth.  And what made this day most special for her baby’s birth was the fact that her mother and brother arrived to be with her from Ulaanbaatar City, Mongolia just 2 hours before Nandin was born!
Enkhbaatar received her prenatal care from the midwives at Manassas Midwifery in a group setting, with other women with March and April due dates.  Known as the Centering Pregnancy model of prenatal care, Manassas Midwifery has been providing care this way since July 2010.  Although some women receive traditional one-on-one care, the majority of pregnant clients of the midwives receive their care in the group setting, thanks to grant funding from the March of Dimes.  At MMWHC, there are currently 5 different Centering Pregnancy group series, underway, in both English and in Spanish, and new groups start about every 6 weeks.  Women generally give this model of care high marks for the friendships they develop and the information they learn, over the course of the 10 pregnancy care group sessions.  Says Enkhbaatar, about receiving her care in a group setting, “I liked it a lot; I felt very comfortable; every session gave me new information.”
Manassas Midwifery and Women’s Health Center is a non-profit health care practice of 3 Certified Nurse Midwives and 3 bilingual office/medical assistant staff.  Opened for business just 18 months ago, MMWHC offers affordable maternity and well-woman services with birth of baby at either Prince William or Potomac Hospitals.  Like Enkhbaatar and Mendbayar, the families served by the midwives at MMWHC come from one of more than 40 countries around the world, as well as from our local community.  Other services available at MMWHC include free childbirth educations classes, free breastfeeding groups with a Lactation Consultant, free doula care for labor and birth, and a hand-knit baby hat, at the end of pregnancy.  For more information about Manassas Midwifery, go to the website, www.manassasmidwifery.com or call 703-330-3285.
